All Our Records Updated for 2018 League Campaign

NFL Table 2018

It will go down in history as only the second pointless campaign for the footballers since the four division structure was brought in (the Division One campaign of 1980/81 being the other one).

Despite that we’ve updated our records which now show:

  • All of Kildare’s results & scorers back to February 1956 here
  • Line-Ups and Scorers Match by Match for the 41 seasons back 1977/78 here
  • Player Records (scoring & appearance records for League & Championship) back to 1977/78 here

We didn’t bother  have time for a match report on the Galway effort but our player ratings and stats from the game are here together with a link to the Irish Independent’s report.

Looking at the stats here are some “highlights”:

Appearances:

  • Only four players started every game (Fergal Conway, Peter Kelly, Eoin Doyle and David Hyland) and only one of those played every minute (Hyland).
  • Conway had the distinction of being substituted in all seven games.

Top appearances are shown below (extract from the table on Player Records section).

2018 league records players

Players Used Last 10 years:

Cian O’Neill is regarded as a somewhat conservative manager who rarely makes changes to his line-up, particularly in defence (as evidenced by 3 players starting all 7 games in defence while keeper Mark Donnellan only missed the dead rubber encounter with Galway as did Mick O’Grady.

Actually the number of players used in the League has been very consistent over the last decade under 3 different managers (other than in 2009 when Kieran McGeeney used a miserly 26).

2018 – 32

2017 – 31

2016 – 30

2015 – 30

2014 – 31

2013 – 31

2012 – 31

2011 – 29

2010 – 32

2009 – 26

Top Scorers:

Kevin Feely, unsurprisingly was top scorer in the league having jointly topped the charts last season with Niall Kelly. This year he was on his own on 23 points with Daniel Flynn closest on 19 (3-10). Kelly, who scored 4-32 over the previous two league campaigns saw his return drop alarmingly in the top division to just 1-5.

Callaghan edges closer:

Eamon Callaghan‘s appearance against Galway and 3 in all in the campaign brought him to 155 in total over a career spanning 16 seasons in the senior panel.

That brings him ever closer to Anthony Rainbow and John Doyle who each made 159 league and championship appearances in the white jersey.

Callaghan‘s 112 starts though leaves him a long way short of Doyle‘s 155 and Rainbow‘s 148.
