Club Championships Getting Down to the Wire

The Club Football competitions are reaching the closing stages and after a thrilling last few week ends the semi final draws in both the Senior and Intermediate Championships have thrown up some mouth-watering ties.

In Senior, in-form Sarsfields, fresh from their convincing wins over Moorefield and St. Laurence’s, will be slight favourites to overcome Celbridge in a repeat of their replayed 2008 final in which Celbridge prevailed. Meanwhile, a young but talented Johnstown Bridge outfit have made it through to their first semi-final since 1996 where they face a battle-hardened Athy outfit who have recovered form superbly since removing manager Pascal Kelleghan mid-stream.

The bookies favour Sarsfields and Athy to reach the final with Athy slight favourites with Paddy Powers at least to take the title.

In the Intermediate Grade there have been some shock results with Castledermot’s 1-11 to 2-6 defeat of Round Towers probably the highlight. Castledermot play Sallins in the semi-final. Raheens will be many people’s fancy for this title given their pedigree (10 times Senior champions) but whether the Caragh men can live up to their heritage remains to be seen.  Raheens play Ellistown in the semi-final.

Meanwhile Kill condemned Caragh to Junior football next season with a 4-8 to 1-13 success on Tuesday in Hawkfield.

In the Junior Championship, Castlemitchell saw off local rivals Rheban by 1-8 to 1-2 in their replayed semi-final and will now meet Cappagh in the Final on Sunday.
