KILDARE Hurling manager David Herity has named twelve newcomers in a 36-strong panel ahead of the Kehoe Cup campaign which throws in next Sunday away to Carlow.

Five of the newcomers come from beaten county finalists Celbridge – Andy Shanagher, Conor Treacy, Jamie Connolly, Pat Leahy and Tom Finnerty with Maynooth providing three – David Qualter, Michéal Hogan and Seán Bean. Cian Bracken (Leixlip), Frank Bass (Confey), Paul Dolan (Éire Óg Corra Choill) are the other newcomers along with Naas man Conan Boran, who links up with brother Rian on the panel.

In all, three-in-a-row county champions Naas provide twelve of the panel and that in itself is a headache for Herity with the Carlow game clashing with the Leinster Intermediate Final where the county town team meet Oylegate Glenbrien.

That game throws in at 1pm in Newbridge with the Carlow game currently scheduled for 2pm in Fenagh, although we understand that might be put back an hour or two. Herity’s fellow Kilkenny man, Tom Mullally, is the manager of both the Naas and Carlow hurlers so you would image the Leinster Council would look favourably on his situation.

Notable absentees from the panel include back-up goalkeeper Mark Doyle, Caolan Smith and Cian Shanahan of Clane, former inter-county footballer David Slattery and Colm Chan from Confey and Coill Dubh’s Declan Flaherty.

Liam Dempsey of Éire Óg Corra Choill, a star with the under-20’s last summer is another absentee along with clubmate Rory O’Neill, Tadhg Forde and Conor Nolan of (Maynooth) and Seán Whelan of Ardclough.

It’s quite a turnover for a team who will be operating in Division 2A of the Allianz League after their promotion last year.
