Thankfully we didn’t pay our €10 for the privilege of watching Kildare record their biggest ever winning margin against an outclassed Carlow IT side.
What benefit this exercise served either Cian O’Neill and his small panel, or indeed the poor student outfit, god only knows.
Kildare, with only 20 players available to O’Neill, had to use virtually the same panel as on Sunday. Ben McCormack took the opportunity to further enhance his reputation with five first half points from play while David Slattery recovered from the nose injury suffered at the week end to notch an early goal. Cathal McNally made his seasonal bow with an energetic display and a 1-3 scoring return. Tommy Moolick was another who enjoyed himself, scoring 1-3 also.
This was Kildare’s second highest scoring return in their history, having scored 4-25 in the league against Kilkenny in 1990 with the Cats managing 1-3 in return. 4-24 was also the Lilywhites return against Athlone IT in this competition three years ago and against Waterford in the league in 1989.
